Activities
The KING’S LODGE HOTEL is the portal to the free reign of imagination, from where you can step out each morning and take your spirit on a fantasy ride of mystical wonder. Whether you choose to casually stroll along the many hiking trails on offer in Hogsback, or cool your feet in the refreshing mountain water of the rock pools at the base of one of the many waterfalls.
The bird life in Hogsback and surrounding areas can be very interesting and varied. The seasons are well represented with the different migrants coming in and the birds leaving the forests for the gardens and vice versa.
Hogsback has a fair share of ‘specials’ viz. Cape Parrot, Bush Blackcap, Knysna Woodpecker and White Starred Robin.
Some Hogsback gardens can boast over 90 different species of birds.
Built in 1995 by Diana Graham, this beautiful place is imbued with a sense of homage.
The approach to the Eco-Shrine begins with a long, leafy tunnel of Hazelnut trees that opens into a spacious, park-like garden. The visitor’s eye is soon drawn to a 6 meter high tree sculpture Diana Graham carved from the remains of a redwood tree that had been struck by lightning.
Over the years it has become one of the major tourist attractions in the area. Diana says that it seems to generate a life of its own with meditations, concerts, weddings, art exhibitions, etc. Diana also runs environmental art workshops for scholars.
Hogsback is hiking paradise with long walks for avid hikers and shorter distances for families and the elderly. Meander over to the tourist information centre for a detailed map with all the information about the various hikes.
The Labyrinth at The Edge is an eleven-circuit Labyrinth, similar in design to the Labyrinth in the Chartres Cathedral in France. It is one of the most intricate Labyrinth designs. The Labyrinth at The Edge has a diameter of 29 meters and a circumference of 91 meters. The length of the pathway is 700 meters, and the total distance of the walk to the centre and out is 1.4 kilometers, making it one of the largest Labyrinths in the world! It was completed in 2002.
The Labyrinth has a protecting and nurturing nature. Homes, seafaring ships and Cathedrals often had a Labyrinth carving or painting, usually on the masthead or over the front door, to keep all within safe.
